On Memorial Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

-John McCrae, 1915

I remember every memorial day weekend growing up my mom would always have a crepe paper poppy attached to the strap of her purse, and I remember that whenever I was with her, she would give me a dollar to donate so i could have one too. I loved those little paper flowers, though I hardly understood their significance way back then. Memorial Day is for remembering, for honoring, and for thanking those who have given their lives, or are risking their lives to make sure that we have the rights and liberties that we have here in America. My grandfather was a veteran, and I remember visiting his and my grandmother's graves every Memorial Day and looking at the flags pushed into the earth of their graves. My sister played TAPS on her trumpet at the cemetery, so it was mostly my mom and I, since it was her parents. I suppose that I'm blessed in the fact that not many of my loved ones (friends or family) are in any branches of the military, I have a couple of friends serving in various branches, and for that, I thank them, but I never have to worry about a family member not coming home, like so many others in this country. Regardless of that fact, I extend my thanks and eternal gratitude to those serving this magnificent, though sometimes flawed, country of ours. In honor of our armed forces, I did the logos for the Marines, the AIr Force, the Navy, and the Army, as well as the American flag accented with what else, a poppy. :) I apologize that the logos aren't perfect, but I did what I could with the space I had. ;)

I used:

Thumb: American flag & poppy

American Apparel Cotton as a base with CND Anchor Blue for the blue, and China Glaze Salsa for the red of the stripes as well as the poppy. for the black I used American Apparel Hassid, and for the green, I used CND Green Scene .

Index: Marines

American Apparel Passport Blue as a base, with China Glaze 2030 from Khrome Collection for the gold, and China Glaze Salsa for the red, over Sally Hansen All the White Stuff, so the red popped.

Middle: Air Force

China Glaze Millennium as a base, with CND Anchor Blue for the logo.

Ring: Navy

Sally Hansen All the White Stuff as a base, with American Apparel Passport Blue, China Glaze 2030 from Khrome Collection for the gold, Sally Hansen All the White Stuff for the shield, with CND Anchor Blue for the blue on the shield, and China Glaze Salsa for the stripes on the shield.

Pinky: Army

American Apparel Hassid as a base, with Sally Hansen All the White Stuff for the star, and outlined in American Apparel Manila.

Topped everything off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Never Have I Ever...

... used EIGHT COATS to get a polish to look opaque on my nails!!
This is one of my new polishes from Martian Delights and it took at least 8 coats. Oh, and you can still see nail line :(
It's a shame cuz it's a really nice colour too. Hopefully it will thicken up, maybe in a year or two, haha.

So - here is my post haul from home.

Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure
I was wearing this all night and most of the day. I loooove it. Thank you so much Karen :D

Bundle Monster Plates
Really pleased with the designs on these. The all over designs are really small which is annoying. But so are the tip designs which might actually be better for my baby nails.

Martian Delights Spree
Some of these polishes are really thin which, I suppose, is what you risk when you buy cheap, old polishes. I will never learn...
I tried using the Chrystal Chrome for stamping with my new BM plates. It was so thin it was practically squirting out of the plates when I was pushing the stamper to it - if you know what I mean?!

Lime Line

Today is another simple one, my apologies- it's been a super busy weekend- I made about 10 dozen cookies along with a bunch of other stuff!! :-P I used another of the new ULTA polishes that I got, In the Limelight, a lime green foil finished polish. Anyway, sorry for the short write-up, it's been a long day and I think its about bedtime.

I used ULTA In the Limelight as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the lines. Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Oh, and BTW

I got sooo bored of revision today that I decided, on the spur of the moment, to just visit home.
I knew there were a lot of interesting packages waiting for me and I wanted to take a decent shower (here I have a little wet room with no water pressure, and the whole room gets soaked everytime I use the shower).

So, I went home and picked up:
  • My Bundle Monster Plates,
  • The Sally Hansen Treasure that I won in Karen's giveaway, and
  • My new haul of 7 polishes from Martian Delights
  • Plus some other bits and bobs - including 6 pairs of earrings that I bought from eBay with an extra 2 pairs free. That was my lovely surprise of the day!
I found Martian Delights when I was searching for some more Sally Hansen Chrome which is amaaazing for stamping but unfortunately discontinued. They have loads of nice polishes at good prices. I think a lot of them are discontinued. I loved buying old, odd polishes - mostly because of the price!

I will provide you with some pictures of my new polishes tomorrow and expect to see lots of BM designs and Hidden Treasure in the coming days :D

Simples

Sorry about the bad colour in this picture - I ran out of sunlight. The base colour is a realy fancy hot pink, not red as it looks in the picture.

ULTA-mate!

Today's manicure is simple, because I was busy busy today! :( I did get an AWESOME new Ulta Professional polish though, so I had to use it- unfortunately it was the only one left in the cardboard display (it's part of a special collection), and there is no label on it, so I don't know what the name of the color is, but I plan on investigating tomorrow... so not to worry, I'll update it in the info. It's gorgeous- a vivid pink with a LIME GREEN reflect?! Sign me up. Awesomeness. LOVE. Anyway. They also had in the same display a lime green FOIL polish- which had a label (In the Limelight), which is gorgeoustastical, I can't wait to use it too...I LOVE foils.

I used ULTA Professional awesome color with no label as a base, with China Glaze Cherish applied with Bundle Monster plate BM03 just to the upper corner of each nail. :) Topped it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Beauty UK or Beauty No-K?

I have a few Beauty UK polishes. They are only cheap - but some if the colours are nice - so they chip easily and are not amazing.
Since I am running out of my beloved NYC Top Coat, I need a new one that's not too expensive since I only ever wear it for a day and get through it really fast.
So, I bought Beauty UK's '2 in 1 Top Coat' which is fine as a base coat but rubbish as a top coat.
Last night, I finished my nails, with top coat, at least 30 minutes before bed but when I woke up, they were all scratched and dented. Since then, I've painted on the blue and added a coat of NYC.
You can see on the thumb where the polish has basically 'stretched' because the top coat didn't do its job and dry the polish underneath :(

So, basically, don't buy Beauty UK top coats :D

Schlongs & Songs

(sorry dad) :-P Tonight I'm going to a show called Naked Boys Singing here in Las Vegas. If you haven't heard of it, it precisely what it sounds like- buff, attractive men singing in the nude. Should be a good time. ;) So, today, for shits and giggles, I decided to attempt to paint the poster on my nails. What is it with me and naked men on my fingernails, seriously? :-D BTW, it is effing HARD to paint tiny little naked dudes on fingernails. HARD! (hee hee) Luckily, because I added the 'censor' bar to make it PG, I didn't have to paint any tiny penises.... or is it penii? ;)

the inspiration:

the nails:

I used OPI Who the Shrek Are You? as a base, with American Apparel Cotton as a base for the dudes and the orange stripe. For the orange stripe, I used essie Tart Deco, for the boys, I used MAC Abalone Shell, then shaded with Nubar Milk Chocolate Creme. For the black bar, I used American Apparel Hassid. Topped it all off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

How do you like your boys to sing? :-D

Getting Carried Away

I'll admit it...I'm a HUGE Sex and the City fan. Love every fashion-filled, cosmopolitan-sipping moment of it. (especially those moments that include Aidan, AKA John Corbett... *drool* <---been dreamy since Northern Exposure) I would kill for Carrie Bradshaw's wardrobe and shoe collection (mostly the shoe collection- I'm a big shoe collector in addition to my nail polish ;)) Anyway, my roommate and I, along with a few other girls, are going to see Sex and the City 2 tonight, I'm super excited!!! I'm curious to see what happens with the Aidan bump-into. (hell, I'd pay the $12 just to stare at him on screen for 2 hrs). The ring finger nail in today's design is way over the top (hence the 'Carried Away' tie-in in the title). Hope you like them! :) Sorry they're a tad shaky though, I was shaking so badly while I was doing them that it was impossible to draw straight lines!! Also, check The Daily Nail: REVIEWS later tonight for a review of the ULTA Glam Goth collection! :)

I used American Apparel Hassid as a base for the black nails, and Zoya Trixie for the jeweled nail. For the pink of the skyline, and logo, I used Massini Power Pack (an inexpensive brand that midwesterners can find at Meijer, but I'm not sure where else to purchase it), and the rhinestones were from Michaels Crafts. :) Topped it all off with some Seche Vite top coat, and away I go. :)

Who's your favorite SATC character- male or female?

Aidan....*sigh*

Mum's the Word

So today I did some swatching of some new colors I snagged at ULTA (post will be up tomorrow), so I didn't have a ton of time left in the day to do an awesometacular design, but I love how simple and striking the palette and image I used for today's design are. I used another of the Bundle Monster plates for this design, I think that it looks like a stylized version of a Chrysanthemum, or 'Mum'.

I used American Apparel Cotton as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the black mums and Essie Foot Loose for the pink mums, which I applied with Bundle Monster plate BM02. Topped it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Today was an awesome day- the story that was written about me for the Las Vegas Weekly Magazine was posted online, and the print version hits newsstands tomorrow here in Vegas!!! :) I'm thrilled!!

Las Vegas Weekly: Nailed It!.

I loved the article- and the last line was a perfect ending! :-P

OPI Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow Suede

Good evening, Dear Reader!

I'd recently ordered OPI's Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow Suede from Trans Design, and have swatches of it for you.  The pictures were taken in somewhat low natural light, first matte, then shiny.

I used ridge filling base coat under this, since mattes are so unforgiving, but made sure it was dry before applying the nail polish.  I used two coats of Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow Suede.  It applied easily and is much thinner and less pigmented than the other OPI Suedes.

I added one coat of top coat to it, but it wasn't perfectly smooth that way.  To fix it, I added a coat of Gelous and then another top coat, and it's nice and shiny and shimmery.

OPI Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow Suede with Top Coat
OPI Here Today... Aragon Tomorrow Suede Nail Polish, Two Coats with Top Coat

I like it.  It's greener and less black than the regular version of the color, and seems to be an improved version of the Suede formula.  It's a lot of coats, but since the color dries so fast, it's not a big deal.

That's all for today, Dear Reader.  Until tomorrow, love and nail polish to you!

Half n Half

It's 8.30pm and I've just woken up. I had an exam this morning so I stayed up revising until 4.30 and had to be up at 6.30, so when I came in I did my nails, watched Arrested Development and went back to bed (check the link for some chickeny goodness, haha. Sorry, I just love this show).

To do this manicure, I had to use guides. Now, I normally avoid these at all costs because they really bug me and I can do a neater job with less fuss free hand but I had to use them for this one to get the Konad to stay in the right place.
When I say guides, I mean hole reinforcers cut in half because they are so much cheaper. :D

Barielle High Steppin' Collection

Good morning, Dear Reader!

I'm late showing you this collection, but samples from Barielle arrived, and so I have it for you today.  High Steppin' is the Shades by Barielle Summer 2010 collection.  It's all shimmers and glitters, not a creme to be found.

As for application, I thought it was above average.  The Shades by Barielle formula is quite thick, but the brush is good and the polish is very easy to control.  I know some people thin thicker polishes right off the bat, but I find no need to here.  All six shades are well pigmented, so each only took two coats.  The dry time varies on these - I've worn two, Electric Boogie and Freestyle, and Electric Boogie dried in normal time, Freestyle was a bit slower.  The color was worth the wait.

The pictures are all in natural light, and Electric Boogie is a full day-old manicure, with the other five being swatches.

Electric Boogie is a midnight blue shimmer with lighter blue glitter.

Slow Motion is a pinkish neutral frost.

Night Moves is a foily silver shimmer along the lines of Orly Shine and Zoya Trixie.

Barielle High Steppin' Collection: Night Moves Nail Polish

Belly Dance is an especially cool one - it's the putty color we've seen so much of this year, but the twist is it's a shimmer.

Passion Pirouette is a pinkish purple frost.

Barielle High Steppin' Collection: Passion Pirouette Nail Polish

Freestyle is another really good one.  Rather than the mint green that we've been bombarded with, Freestyle is more of a light spring green shimmer with glitter.

Barielle High Steppin Collection: Freestyle Nail Polish
Shades by Barielle Freestyle Nail Polish, Two Coats

That is the High Steppin' Collection from Shades by Barielle.  I like the fact that the polishes are colors have a twist on them, for the most part, and I'm pleased with them.  I have to try Passion Pirouette on its own to see if the frostiness dies down a bit when it's dry, but to have one questionable polish out of six ain't bad.

These are Big Three Free, and they're $8 each on Barielle.com.

That's all for now, Dear Reader.  Until next time, love and nail polish to you!

How Geeky!

For those of you not in the know, today (May 25) is known as Geek Pride Day! :) So in honor of the day, I painted 'geeks' on my nails. Not the carnival sort of geek, but the nerdy sort... since there are two definitions. ;)

I used MAC Abalone Shell as a base, with American Apparel Hassid for the frames of the glasses, as well as the eyes and outline of the nose. For the shading/mouth line, I used a mix of MAC Abalone Shell and Nubar Milk Chocolate Creme. For the lenses of the glasses, I mixed Sally Hansen All the White Stuff with Orly Snowcone, and for the unibrows, I used Nubar Milk Chocolate Creme for all but the ring finger, which I used CND Electric Orange mixed with a touch of the Nubar Milk Chocolate Creme, also, for the teeth I used Sally Hansen All the White Stuff. I topped everything off with two coats of Seche Vite top coat because who doesn't like shiny geeks.

So, how many digits of pi do you know? Do you speak 1337? What is your character in World of Warcraft? ;)

Fierce

I had a bit of an accident with this one. Right after I'd finished, I managed to spill acetone all over my hand but I didn't have time to do it all again so I just tried to shake it off - so that's why it's a bit smudgy. Haha.

Nails Inc Ice Cream Collection

Good morning, Dear Reader!

I have swatches of Nails Inc's Ice Cream Collection for you this morning.  The collections consists of four cremes, all perfect in two coats.  They applied exceptionally well, like any Nails Inc I've encountered.

The first is a pale peachy pink called Maple Street, a work safe color.

Spring Mews is a great springy green, probably closest to Barry M Mint Green, but still a couple of shades off from it.

Strawberry Hill is a perfect deep pink.

Devonshire Row is a slightly muted purple.  I wore this one as a manicure with Nails Inc Kensington Caviar base and top coat.

Nails Inc Ice Cream Collection: Devonshire Row Nail Polish

Those are the nail polishes of the Nails Inc Ice Cream Collection, and I'm really glad I got them.

As for the base and top coat, they came in another set I got - I never would have bought them alone.  I tried them just for the heck of it, and was pleasantly surprised.  The top coat doesn't indicate that it's quick dry, but it seems to be, as I tested a nail after about fifteen minutes and it was dry.  I did accidentally mess up one nail a little later, although I don't know how - I just noticed it was messed up.  Since I don't know what I did, I can't attribute it to a shortcoming in the top coat, so I'm going to test it a little when I wear Nails Incs.  If you get the base and top in a set, I'd definitely suggest giving them a try rather than just dismissing them - I really liked them.

That's all for now, Dear Reader.  Until next time, love and nail polish to you!

The Collection as of 5/24/10

I get quite a few requests asking to see my collection of polishes, so for those of you that are interested....

China Glaze:

Zoya:

Essie/OPI:

American Apparel (not all are shown- I have all but the topcoat and Rose Bowl, just thought the polish rainbow was pretty ;)):

American Apparel/butterLONDON/Sinful Colors/Color Club:

ORLY/Piggy Polish/Milani:

Sally Hansen:

Urban Outfitters/Pure Ice/ULTA/Barielle:

Dare 2 Wear/ALDO:

Miscellaneous 2 (mostly minis, with some striper polishes):

There ya go. :) Hope you don't think I'm as nuts as my family does. ;)

Beware the Koopa Troopas!!

Proof I'm a nerd, but the totally rad kind of nerd: if you call my phone, instead of you hearing ringing, which is a normal thing, you hear my ringback...which is the Super Mario Bros. theme. Awesome, right? Anyway, from time to time, I forget that I have that ringback, so when people comment on it after calling for the first time, it always makes me chuckle, and today, it provided inspiration for my nails!! (I didn't even know that there was a new Mario game out recently- I'm behind on things, obviously) I did the question mark blocks on one hand, and on the other hand, I did coins and a growth mushroom! :)

I used

Left hand - Question Mark Blocks

American Apparel Palm Springs as a base, then mixed with American Apparel Pinto for the question mark symbol. For the black, I used American Apparel Hassid.

Right Hand - Coins and Growth Mushroom

Orly Snowcone as a base, with Love & Beauty Bronze for the coins (from Forever 21), Sally Hansen All the White Stuff as a base for the mushroom, China Glaze Salsa for the red, then American Apparel Hassid for the black on all 5 nails. I also mixed a little of the American Apparel Hassid with the Sally Hansen All the White Stuff to shade the stem of the mushroom.

Topped everything off with 2 coats of Seche Vite top coat to make it gleam. :)

Now get going- you have to save the princess!!!
